The Berkeley Stem Cell Center was awarded a training grant by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). The CIRM training grant supports two clinical fellows at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute, eight science scholars (four pre-doctoral and four postdoctoral), one pre-doctoral scholar in the humanities or social sciences, and one law fellowship, shared by two law scholars. Postdoctoral scholars may be affiliated with laboratories at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, or UC Berkeley. All pre-doctoral CIRM scholars are UC Berkeley students. Scholars are primarily engaged in research projects in their respective fields of expertise. However, training program activities are designed to provide all scholars with a broad understanding of the scientific, legal and societal questions at the forefront of this field. Scholars participate in a course in the ethical, legal and social aspects of stem cell research and in a multidisciplinary scholars' journal club.

The research interests of the Berkeley Stem Cell Center's current CIRM Scholars are described on the Scholars page.

Clinical fellow CIRM Scholars are appointed by Children's Hospital Oakland and Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute. For more information, please contact Dr. Bertram Lubin, (blubin@chori.org ) the training program's Clinical Research Director.

Pre- and postdoctoral CIRM Scholars are selected annually by competitive application. Current CIRM Scholars may re-apply once for a maximum of two years of support. Prospective CIRM Scholars must be affiliated with UC Berkeley, CHORI or LBNL at the time of their application. Applications from current and prospective CIRM Scholars are given equal consideration. The next application perod for CIRM Scholars will be in April, 2008.
