Stem cells play important roles in tissue remodeling, regeneration and disease development. The research in our cell and tissue engineering laboratory is focused on: (1) the role of stem cells and the underlying mechanisms in tissue regeneration and vascular disease development, (2) how biophysical factors such as surface micro/nano topography, matrix mechanical properties and hemodynamic forces regulate stem cell functions and cell reprogramming, and (3) how the micro/nano structure and the chemistry of biomaterials can be engineered to recruit stem cells and promote tissue regeneration. We take a multidisciplinary approach to combine the principles and technologies in engineering, biology and medicine to address these issues at the interfaces of stem cell engineering, tiissue engineering, biomaterials and mechanobiology.
