Resources

The Siebel Stem Cell Institute
A UC Berkeley-Stanford Consortium
The Thomas and Stacey Siebel Foundation established the Siebel Stem Cell Institute to catalyze and facilitate pioneering stem cell research collaborations between groups at UC Berkeley and Stanford, and visiting scholars in residence.
Seed Funding
Principal Investigators at UC Berkeley may apply for Siebel Institute seed funding for innovative and collaborative stem cell research projects involving Stanford University laboratories.
Siebel Visiting Scholars

The Siebel Institute seeks to advance stem cell research by supporting outstanding visiting scholars from international or United States institutions, to be in residence at UC Berkeley laboratories. Candidate nominations from Stem Cell Center affiliates are welcome.

California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
CIRM funds stem cell research at research institutions and companies throughout California. The organization was established in 2004 with the passage of Proposition 71, which provided $3 billion in funding. Grants support research with embryonic, adult and reprogrammed (iPS) stem cells, all with the goal of bringing new medical therapies to the people of California and the world.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research
The MJFF encourages inquiries from UCB researchers. Although their emphasis is translational and clinical research they also fund high-risk high-reward discovery research toward a cure for Parkinson's Disaese.

The Berkeley Stem Cell Center welcomes undergraduates and graduate students' interest in stem cell research. Stem cell-related activities offered at UC Berkeley during the 2008-09 academic year include:

Bioengineering C218/ Molecular and Cell Biology C237
Stem Cells and Directed Organogenesis. (Spring 2010, Irina Conboy and Michael Conboy)

Advanced Stem Cell and Developmental Biology (MCB 231)
(Spring 2010, Richard Harland)

Stem Cells: Science and Society DeCal (BioE 98/198)
Stem Cells: Education and Outreach DeCal (IB 98/198)
(Fall 2009 and Spring 2010)

Student Society for Stem Cell Research
The Cal chapter strives to reflect the SSSCR cornerstones of community service, education, advocacy, career development, and fundraising. Contact Cal-SSSCR President Alexandra Race (airace@berkeley.edu) for more information.

California Stem Cell Education Initiative
SSSCR members speak to high school students about stem cell biology, medicine, and engineering. We are currently working to expand this program, and help create and implement the CIRM model stem cell curriculum. Contact Laurel Barchas: lbarchas@berkeley.edu. Funded by the CIRM Stem Cell Education Initiative

Stem Cell Science and Values Education Initiative
This initiative facilitates dialog and informs the public about the current scientific, political, and ethical implications of stem cell research. Funded by the Edmond D. Rothschild Foundation. See: http://stsc.berkeley.edu/Projects/STSC_StemCell_Education.htm.
