In collaboration with Prof. Irina Conboy's laboratory in the Dept. of Bioengineering, we are validating and optimizing a novel instrument that directly characterizes and separates, based on cell-surface markers and morphology, single adult muscle precursor cells (satellite cells) without the need for initial culturing. Skeletal muscle satellite cells are known to be heterogeneous and there are no known genetic markers that identify true quiescent muscle stem cells. Separating and characterizing sub-populations of satellite cells would allow us to define the stem versus progenitor cells within the myogenic lineage.
